MATARIKI

MATARIKI

Bright shining stars
As beautiful as heaven.
Bright blue stars
Accompanied by
bright silvery moon
In dark blue sky.

Getting up in Ata wawe
To see seven sisters dance
Upon the bright silvery moon.

Being nervous but excited
at the same time
We would walk upon
Sand like a rough carpet
Waves crashing
Crash, Bang, Swoosh like fireworks.

I would smell sea salt water
Wind's cold breath.

We would wear warm onesies
To stop freezing and sneezing.
We would watch seven sisters for
Seconds, minutes, and hours.

It would be sunrise soon
And we must go back.

I smell Kai
We begin to pack.
Stars we saw for hours
Were MATARIKI

MATARIKI

whetu e tiaho Bright
Ka rite ki ataahua rite te rangi.
whetu puru Bright
tahi e
marama kanapa hiriwa
I roto i te pouri rangi puru.

Whiwhi ake i roto i te Ata wawe
Hei kite whitu tuahine kanikani
Ki runga ki te marama kanapa hiriwa.

Te io engari oaoa
i te wa ano
e haere tatou i runga i
Sand rite te whāriki taratara
ngaru takataka
Crash, Bang, Pīrere rite pahū.

e hongi wai tote moana ahau
manawa makariri o Wind.

e kakahu tatou onesies mahana
Ki te mutu mīti me te tihe.
e mataara tatou whitu tuahine hoki
Hēkona, meneti, me haora.

E riro te reira te putanga mai hohoro
A me haere matou hoki.

hongi ahau Kai
timata tatou ki te fao.
Whetu i kite matou mo haora
ko MATARIKI

  1. Hi Josh, I’m Brodi from Paihia School. I really like how you described Matariki in your story. I like how you said the Matariki Stars are as beautiful as heaven. In the story below you wrote the story in Maori that is amazing. Did you use google translater to translate it to maori?

    1. Yes, thank you Brodi. I did use google translator for changing the text into Maori, thank you for noticing. Did you really like "the Matariki stars are as beautiful as heaven"? That was my favourite line too.

  2. Hello Josh
My name is Daniel and I am from Panmure Bridge school. I really like your poem about Matariki. My favorite part about your poem is how you managed to translate it into Maori. Keep up the excellent work Josh.
